Hi,
Does anybody have any hints on methods of finding hidden GPS trackers placed on cars without the owners consent? These pesky little things are available all over the internet for small money, and are fast becoming quite a nuisance.
Presumably the best method is to check for GSM text transmissions, as this is the only thing that transmits.

Hmmmmm.... this was posted over a week ago, with no responses so far. Does anybody have any thoughts on this issue?

re: Finding hidden GPS trackers?
Sheesh, half the electronic geniuses in the known world reading here, and nobody's stepping up? C'mon folks!
I'll start with the low-tech, non-glamorous, non-expert solution - physical inspection. If the device is a logger, it may not send any RF signals at all. That means your best bet is to physically find it. There are a limited number of places to hide such a thing - particularly if it's actually GPS-based.
Keep in mind that people wanting to track you have a variety of options available - like your mobile phone. GPS-based trackers are but one way. Alto, even the trackers that transmit sometimes do it in short bursts. You'd need to be listening when they're talking.
If you use social media, they probably don't even need to track you - you may just be self-reporting your location and activities.
My defense is to never do anything interesting enough to make tracking me a worthwhile exercise...

re: Finding hidden GPS trackers?
Thanks for the response, Kevin.
Physical search has so far failed to find it. So, I'm
looking for suggestions to help narrow the search for a real-time
GPS/GSM tracker. GPS loggers need to be recovered and
read, usually - so they are not real-time.
Social media and cellphone tracking are not the issue.
As to why, well people can decide that they want to track
you for all sorts of reasons - from simple curiosity to
something more sinister. It's just too easy to do these days,
and it is being done. There have been reported cases of
trackers being attached to oil delivery trucks, and logs made
of all the houses that have just had their heating oil tanks
topped up, only to be relieved of same shortly later.

re: Finding hidden GPS trackers?
Maybe placing the car in an area with no network coverage , the GSM will periodically try to acquire the link with the base station , so a femtocell like these:
http://www.ipaccess.com/
could do the job , informing you of its presence .
I'm not sure at all , but on some advanced models you could find a pc software with log files containing informations about the link requests.
Good luck.
